INF Nepal Donor Liaison Officer Pratibha Manaen has published her first novel. 'A friend in a thousand' is the beautifully written story of Tara and Manushi, two girls living in a Nepali village. Both of the friends have difficult lives because of their gender, caste and lack of education. However, Manushi dreams of being able to read and write one day, and Tara encourages Manushi to realise her dream and find her voice. All profits from the sales of the novel will go to 'The Manushi Fund', which Pratibha has established especially in order to help girls like Manushi and Tara. The cover artwork for the novel was produced by INF graphic designer Ali Wilkinson, and Pratibha thanks several INF friends in the book's 'acknowledgements' page, including: INF Member Sue Kemp; former INF Members Vicki Wellner and Philip and Deborah McMillan; and INF Associate Member Mirjam Bergh. 'A friend in a thousand' is available from the Indian publisher ISPCK for 175 Indian Rupees / US$9 / £5 [ISBN 978-81-8465-198-0; 194 pages].
