Maya Tharu, a 60-year-old from Rupandehi, Nepal, shares an inspiring story of resilience and newfound independence. Twenty years ago, Maya’s life took a tragic turn when she was struck by a bus while crossing the street, leading to the amputation of both her legs. As a mother of two young sons, navigating life and motherhood became a daily challenge. Yet, her greatest heartbreak came later, when her sons left home, leaving her and her husband to fend for themselves in their old age.
The pain of abandonment weighed heavily on Maya, filling her with feelings of loneliness and rejection. But through the support of the Wheels for Nepal program, Maya found a new sense of hope and freedom. “This wheelchair will allow me to be independent at home,” she shares gratefully, “and the first thing I want to do is prepare a meal for my husband.” With the ability to move around, Maya has rediscovered purpose and love, embracing life with resilience and a spirit of gratitude.
